Homemade Recipes & Kitchen Tips

Homemade Shake N' Bake Recipe:  Dredge pork chops in the mixture and bake!
  • 2 T Cornmeal
  • 2 T flour
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. sage
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder

 

Thousand Island Salad Dressing

  • 3/4 cup mayonaise
  • 1 Tbsp. sweet pickle relish
  • 2 Tbsp. ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp. green pepper finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp. onion finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire

Mix all ingredients and refrigerate

 

Ranch Dressing

  • 1 cup mayonaise
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp. green onion tops finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp. paprika
  • 1/8 tsp. cayenne
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper

Mix all ingredients and refrigerate

 

Italian Dressing

  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. minced parsley
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. oregano

Combine all ingredients in jar.  Shake before pouring.  Refrigerate.

 

Homemade Pancake Syrup

  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 3 Tbsp. molasses
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 tsp. butter flavoring
  • 1 tsp. maple extract

Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves.

Instead of throwing away heels of bread, freeze them and use to make your own bread crumbs or croutons.

 

To get the most out of your celery, wrap celery in aluminum foil and refrigerate.

 

Make your own non-stick cooking spray by filling a spray bottle with your favorite cooking oil.

 

Bake your own bread.

 

Leftover meat?  Dice up leftover turkey, chicken or beef.  Freeze in 1 1/2 cup portions to be used in quick casseroles or salads.

 

Apple Storage - Wrap individual unbruised apples in tissue paper and keep in cool place.

 

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

  • 6 tsp. chili powder
  • 4 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 5 tsp. paprika    
  • 3 tsp. onion powder
  • 2 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp. cayenne

Mix and store in airtight container.  This homemade mix is stronger than the store bought so you don't need as much.
