Rachel I shop every 2 weeks and my shopping day in Thursday--DH payday. I have always "tried" to be under $5.00 per day with enough leftovers for lunch the next day or for Wednesday before church. Sometimes I go over but, the next day's meal may be less, so it evens out.

I make soup every week and on week nights we always have soup from monday through thursday. After the soup we are allowed to have:
mondays - tuna salad/tuna sandwich
tuesdays - ham and cheese toast
wednesdays - pizza
thursdays - hot-dogs/egg salad
fridays - pasta or lasagna
on weekends always fish for 2 meals (which ever I find on sale or cheapest that week)

Something I just started last fall, and it works great!
I write my grocery list w/ the menu for 2 weeks on the back. After I finish shopping I stick the menu side of the list up on my fridge and let my family "order" from it (if I'm in the mood, otherwise it's my pick). At the end of the 2 weeks I put the list in my recipe box to be used later. My plan is to get a rotation where I can just pull a shopping list/menu and go!

Southwest Soup and Eggrolls
Shepherds Pie, Salad, Bread
Breaded Chicken, Potatoes, and steamed veggies
Baked Ziti, Salad, Bread
Chicken Stirfry, Rice, Springrolls
Pizza & Gingerbeer
Potato Soup, Buttered toast
Bangers & Mash, Peas, Gravy
Mustard Chicken, steamed veggies, rice
Fajitas, Beans, Cornbread
Pizza & Gingerbeer

All meals create leftovers for the next day's lunch, Saturday nights we get chinese takeaway for about $7 total, and Sundays we eat dinner with the in-laws usually sharing the cooking between us.
