I am trying the tightwad gazettes recipe for laundry stains on some pretty tough stains tonight, the cleaning cloths....these are always stained even after bleaching them. They have been stained for years and nothing took the stains out. I will post tomorrow how they turned out.
her recipe was; 1/2 c all fabric bleach (like clorox 2) 1/2 cup dishwasher powder 5 gallons hot water to make it simplier for me I calculated the rate for my lowest washer settin, which is 12.5 gallons, adjusted the ingredients accordingly, and put everything in there to soak. (that way i don't have to lift the bucket and make my back sore). Tomorrow I will just add some laundry soap and run through a cycle, then dry. I should have an answer for you all about 12 noon or so. Since all these cleaning rags had already been washed and dried already before, I did add some old burp cloths in there that too, had been stained by formula....think its a good experiment....if the burp rags (diapers) come out good they will be sent to GD for the upcoming baby. ![]() (I put all the ingredients in and filled the washer to the lowest setting and let it agitate well before adding the cloths.)

Here are the results....drumroll, all the cleaning cloths came out clean!!! It brightened up all of the colors also, although it does recommend you test first. 2 of my dishcloths that I thought were ruined, came out like new. They are back in the discloth pile now. I am going to try it next round on some infant stains, since I don't have an infant, I will use something from my friends store (thrift) that is to be donated, due to stains....I won't be getting that done till next week. I am hooked on this stuff...the only thing that I saw left in, was where I had used metal polish and rubbed with my finger wrapped in the cloth, and that I really had to look for, Probably would have come out if I had pre soaked them in this to begin with. Also I'd like to say there was no odd odor, having soaked these things in hot water, I wondered about whether it would smell or not. I went to the dollar tree and got 2 more boxed of both the all fabric bleach and the dishwasher powder, so I would have it when I needed it.....I will try it on hubbys socks monday, even bleach doesn't get them clean cause he works on the road crew and the dirt is just ground in......if it works on them I will be a happy camper. I also added it to the wash for his overalls, he works on cars in, and they came out clean also....I did, on both of these, use vinegar rinse (1cup) to completely cut the residue, since one isn't supposed to do laundry with the dishwasher stuff.

I was given a bunch of baby clothes for the great grand, some were formula stained....I used the "recipe" and the old stains came right out and didn't hurt the colors....I soaked them about 6 hours in it....look good. I am thinking there is something in the dishwasher powder that works on the "food stains" especially well for washing...wish I had known this years ago.

That's awesome!! Think it would work on chocolate? One of my favorite shirts has a huge chocolate stain on the chest.

We used a recipe similar to this when I was a teen and was amazed at how well it worked. Many garments were brought back to life that we thought were gone forever, just hadn't thrown out yet.

This has worked on most everything I have tried it on. I too had chocolate ice cream stains, so much for healthy eating, LOL it worked. It can't hurt to try. What amazed me was it works on stains that have already been laundered!!!
