I have learned over the years to do the same. I have 2 small children that like to play in my baking drawer. Every time I go to the dollar store (about once a month) I tend to pick up a set of measuring spoons or cups. I have them every where in my house. They are cheap and they make it easy to keep track of how long something lasts too.
Use it up, wear it out, deal with it or do without.
