I don't date the leftovers I put in the frig. I have a 99 Cent Store calander that I write down what we had for dinner that night. This does a number of things for me.
1-when You wonder how old something is.
2-helps me keep track of what we have been eating for dinner.
3-if we eat out, the place and cost is recorded.
It makes it easy to see at a glance.

as for storing leftovers. it goes in a canning jar or a zip lock bag - it depends on what it is.
Use it up, wear it out, deal with it or do without.
